After winning gold in London Saturday, Serena Williams did what many are calling the unthinkable. No, she didn’t crash her car after a night of partying. No she didn’t get caught in the midst of a torrid love affair. What did she do, you may ask? Well, she danced. And not just any dance, Ms. Williams did the crip walk….yes that crip walk. Broadcasters and people were confused about the jig Williams did and in fact the reporters didn’t know what to call the dance, obviously they’ve never seen a Snoop video.
The backlash was almost instantaneous. Bill Plaschke, a sports writer for the L.A. Times tweeted,
"Isn’t there some kind of dance done by multi-millionaires who live in exclusive South Florida neighborhoods? Serena C-walking at Wimbledon only shows how long she’s been away from home, separated from violence and death associated with that dance”.
Another blogger, Debbie Schlussel had this to say:
“Yup, that’s what we need representing America, a Gold Medalist who, upon winning, glorifies hardened criminals who murder each other — and innocent Americans — for sport.”
Well backlash or not, many of us know the dance Williams did was not to promote gang violence and let us remember that hindsight is always 20/20.
